La Veta Madre is the Spanish term for The Mother Lode. If you're a Recreational Gold Prospector you know
it was an incredibly rich vein of gold that ran from Sierra City in northern California, south for approximately 300 miles to Mariposa. A trip along
highway SR49 will provide a tremendous amount of the colorful history of this country, that started in 1849.Over 500 mining towns grew quickly throughout the area where ever gold was found. Men came from all over the world by the thousands seeking their fortune. Very few of the miners actually became rich, but many did very well and remained here. Their families followed them later, and with the families came many of the customs from their homeland. One of those customs was, of course, the foods they were used to eating, and the methods that were used to prepare the food. The recipes in this book were collected from family members in 1996, and published as a limited first edition. Some are the recipes that were passed down for generations, and are from various countries. The first publishing was distributed to the contributing family members only as the original FAMILY HERITAGE COOK BOOK. This Gold Miners Edition is dedicated to those hardy miners, and the history they provided. This book is a collection of 110 favorite recipes of more than a dozen families. Included are Soups & Salads, Lunch Dishes, Main Dishes, Side Dishes, and of course Desserts as well as Snacks & Treats. One we got somehow, in a round-about way, from a Roxanne whose friends mother-in-law had lunch at “The Hedges” at Nieman-Marcus. For dessert she had a cookie. She thought it was the most wonderful cookie she had ever tasted, and asked if the recipe was available. She was told that it was and the charge was two-fifty. She said that’s fine. She received the recipe and told them to just charge her account. In December when she got her bill, there was a charge of $250.00. She called Nieman’s and told them there was a mistake on her bill; that the charge should be $2.50. She was told there was NO mistake - the charge was correct. She has vowed to get even with them by giving the cookie recipe to everyone she possibly can. She also asks that all who gets a copy, PLEASE send it to everyone you know.
