The ordinary sluice box shown below can be placed in the stream with the wide end up-stream so the water can flow
through freely. You can then shovel the material directly into the wide end of it. The brown sand and gravel in the bank
material will be moved over the riffles by the current and leave out of the down-stream end. The box will capture the black
sand and gold concentrate on the down stream side of the riffles in the bottom of the box, as shown below in the section A - A view.
The gold gathers there because the water flow slows up as it goes over the riffles, and being about 19 times heavier than the water
it drops to the bottom immediately. Some of the black sand will gather there also, and will remain there until it is cleaned out.
You can remove the concentrate from the box and recover just the gold using a pan. You can be panning like a pro with
